Which is stronger I-beam or tubing?
Beams generally have thicker flanges and thinner webs, so pound for
pound, beams generally make better beams than tubes do. If loaded
as a column, the one with the largest cross section will be the
strongest as long as you don't get into buckling.
Why is an I-beam stronger than a rectangular beam?
On the other hand, if 2 beams have the same cross-sectional area,
then the one with this area distributed in an I-beam shape will be
much more spread out with much larger outer dimensions than the
compact rectangular section. And this makes the I-beam MUCH
stronger.
How does an I beam resist bending?
Due to the distance between the flange and the axis, I beams have a
high moment of inertia. The larger the moment of inertia, the
lesser the beam will bend to resist the bending moments. I beams
can be rolled, welded, extruded, and riveted as well because of
this property.
